Dorm Room Design on a Budget
from:Furnishing and decorating a dorm room is fun but it can be a challenge for several reasons, not the least of which is the limited amount of space. It can also be a financial challenge to budgets that are already stretched just trying to get to campus with everything you absolutely have to have. It doesn’t help, either, when about a gazillion ads come out advertising all the fun stuff you can get for your dorm room when you simply don’t have the funds to finance the renovation. Think about it, though, you don’t want your dorm room to look like everyone else’s anyway. Now is the time to really express your personality and thankfully, you can do that on a budget.
Think Unique
With such a small space to work with, you have to think of function as well as décor but there’s no reason the bedside table that holds your lamp and alarm clock can’t be a decorator piece as well. You can save a lot of money and have bragging rights at the same time if you buy someone else’s castoff and make it over yourself. Painting or refinishing a table is relatively easy and it will turn into a conversation piece if it is an antique. Alternatively, you can distress it yourself if you can’t find a reasonably priced antique table.
Limit Your University Branded Expenditures
Every college town has stores full of university branded accessories and while you’re obviously proud of your school, be careful when shopping the college stores to furnish your dorm room. Instead, shop the discount stores and save a bundle. When it comes to the university branded items, opt for a pair of pajamas or a t-shirt and save the twenty bucks you would spend on a tiny trash can. You can buy a wicker one for a dollar at the dollar store. In fact, while you’re there, look around for other ways you can save and decorate your dorm room on a dime. For example, many dollar stores have cute picture frames and if they’re not already cute, then paint them, add a ribbon, and you’ll have cool and unique picture frames to show off your pictures
Your Bed
Splurge on the comforter and pillow but buy cheap sheets to save money yet still have a comfortable and attractive bed. Or consider buying a bed in a bag and you’ll have the entire thing taken care of without having to spend too much. Before you buy a comforter, though, make sure it is machine washable or you’ll be sorry later when something gets spilled on it. Many comforters are reversible too, so if you do get a stain on one side, it’s easy to just flip it over so it will still look nice.
