How to Choose the Right Desk

from:

Choosing the right desk is one of the most important parts of designing your home office. If this is where you will be doing the bulk of your work then you want to make sure you get a desk that is both comfortable and functional. However, there are several things you need to take into consideration before you choose the desk.

Size

How big your home office is will have a direct effect on how big of a desk you should select. Obviously, if you have a tiny home office then you will likely need to choose a smaller desk. However, if you think in vertical terms, you can still get a small corner desk with various storage options.

If your home office is a generous size then you have a lot more options when it comes to how big your desk is. Now you can consider other options that may have a bearing on what kind of desk you get.

Laptop or Desktop

Obviously, a desktop computer will take up a lot more room than a laptop will. You have to have room for the tower, the monitor, and of course, the keyboard. In this case, you may want to make sure you get a desk with a keyboard tray, although most all traditional computer desks do come with keyboard trays. Not everyone prefers the traditional computer desk though, especially some who work primarily on laptops. Working on a laptop gives you more options because you don’t have to have compartments for all the components. If you work on a laptop, you can buy an antique desk if you prefer without worrying about room for components.

Budget

Of course, budget is something most of us must consider. If you only have $50 to spend on a computer desk, you can still get a decent one. You can just about name your price when it comes to computer desks or office desks because the prices range from well under a hundred dollars to several hundred dollars or more. If you like the antique look of a desk but require the modern cutouts, you can buy a heavy oak roll top computer desk with all the modern amenities for several hundred dollars. So as far as budget goes, you can almost always find a decent desk regardless of what your budget is.

Privacy

This is important because if you have various family members running in and out of your home office you may want to get a desk that locks. If you are lucky enough to have your office all to yourself, you may not need to be concerned with this option. Nevertheless, do think about whether or not you need a desk that locks before you go shopping. Thankfully, these also come in almost every price range so you don’t have to get an expensive desk in order to get one that locks.
