Polyurethane Finish: Tips And Uses

from:

Do it yourselfers are likely to use polyurethane finish at some point. It is one of the more common application options for those who are applying a finish to a wood surface. The good news is that this product is not only easy to apply but it is also an ideal choice for its durability and lasting beauty. You should invest in quality finish brands and you should ensure you are applying the product properly. You can find polyurethane finish in both an oil based version and a water based version. Choose based on the project you are doing.

Tips For Applying A Polyurethane Finish

To help you to get the great looking finish you are after with polyurethane finish, keep these tips in mind.

Seal off the space you are working in. You do not want any dust in the space. Thoroughly clean the area first, to ensure that there are no dust particles floating around. If there are, you are likely to end up with small dust marks in the finished product.

Do ensure the area is ventilated. This means keeping windows and doors open if possible. This will ensure that you are getting enough fresh air in while you are working on the project. If you feel light headed at all during the process, step outside for a while.

Use mineral spirits and a lint free cloth to clean the surface prior to applying the polyurethane finish to the area. You will want to ensure that all dirt and dust has been fully removed before you apply the finish.

Use a brush for the application. You will want to use a small amount of product on the brush at one time. Then, when applying it, use even strokes, going just one way. This creates a nice, even finish. Do not apply too much product to the surface at one time.

When using the finish, do not shake the product in the can. When you first open the can of the finish, use a painter's stick to stir it. You want to ensure that the bottom of the product is stirred in well. Do not shake since this can cause bubbles to rise into the product.

When applying a polyurethane finish, pay close attention to the details. Catch any drips as they are happening and wipe them off, with the brush. You also should allow the product to dry fully before applying a second coat to it. When you do recoat it, you will again need to pay close attention to the application method. Long, one way strokes are the best.

When complete, ensure the polyurethane finish is allowed to dry thoroughly before you move. This drying process should take no shorter than 24 hours, longer is better.
