Understanding Wallpaper: The Sticky

from:

Until you start shopping for wallpaper, you may not realize just how many options there are in terms of wallpaper adhesive. Which product should you buy? This can be confusing, but it does not have to be. The key is to know the difference between your options so that you can select the product that is a good fit for your particular needs. There are several key things to keep in mind, starting with the experience you have with wallpaper.

How Much Experience Do You Have?

If this is the first time that you will be applying wallpaper to your home, you may want to invest in prepasted product. This will help you to ensure the product adheres well without having to worry about applying too much or too little of the paste. More so, the process is just so much simpler than having to pate the backings yourself. For those with more experience, you may want to choose one of the other products, assuming prepasted options are not available or not wanted.

Here's a look at the other options.

Prepasated wallpaper: This is the most common product. You will simply run it under water which activates the adhesive, allowing it to adhere well. This product is less messy and it is often able to be removed from the wall within a few seconds to be repositioned as necessary.

Clear Adhesives: These are either corn or wheat based. This is a better choice over clay based adhesives since it is easy to clean up. You will find these available for most products you buy.

Clay Adhesives: This product is based on a starch. Most of the time, this product is not considered a good fit for the at home user since it is much harder to apply. Generally speaking there is no real need for this level of sophistication in the home. It has a higher wet tack, too.

Vinyl Over Vinyl: This product is designed to improve the bonding of the wallpaper, but it can be much harder to work with. Once they dry, they are permanent. It is very hard to remove these. The real benefit with this product comes in when you are applying the wallpaper over existing product, such as existing wallpaper. It is a better stick quality on these vinyl applications.

If you are confused as to which type of wallpaper adhesive to use, it is best to consider one of the more easily applied products such as the prepasted products or the clear adhesives. Often, the prepasted wallpapers are less expensive in the long term since you do not have to buy the pasting product. If you are unsure what you can use on your surface or for the paper you are buying, it is best to ask your retailer first.
