Wallpaper Maintenance In High Humidity

from:

Wallpaper maintenance is an ongoing process. Even if you have wallpaper that has been hanging just fine for years, if there is high humidity for a period of time, it is likely that the wallpaper will start to buckle. Humidity works against wallpaper for one reason: it causes the wallpaper's adhesive to activate again, which means that the adhesive is wet enough to cause the paper to fall. This process can be difficult to stop once it has started. It can ruin the look and overall appeal of the wallpaper in a short amount of time.

Moisture Damage?

Moisture in any form, including high humidity is going to be a problem for any area that you place wallpaper on. Therefore, it is best to ensure that the area is not exposed to moisture if possible. If you are placing the wallpaper on a wall that has moisture problems, the wall should be sealed properly first. This will lock out the moisture from the wall and therefore from the wallpaper.

If you have a moisture problem, you need to address this first, before placing any wallpaper on the wall. If you already have the wallpaper up, there are a few things you can try to do. First, try to keep the area as dry as possible. If the room is always very humid, the best option is to use a dehumidifier regularly to avoid any type of damage over the long term. High humidity can cause problems for any type of material, even the drywall in your home. Removing it is the best possible method.

Another solution to high humidity damage is to apply a clear varnish over the top of the edges of the wallpaper. Along each seam, apply a clear layer of the varnish, while pressing down on the edges. This helps to keep the seams from buckling up or curling. This is the first area you will find damage from humidity. It is best to get these problems fixed as soon as possible to avoid further complications.

If there is any mold or mildew growth on the wallpaper, you will need to remove it. Even if you wash down the wallpaper, it is unlikely that you will be able to remove all of the mold growth located under the wallpaper. This problem is likely to continue unless you remove the wallpaper, fix the moisture problem, seal the wall completely with a top quality sealant and then reply the wallpaper.

Wallpaper maintenance tips like these are an important part of maintaining the integrity of the wallpaper and the look of the room. If you have high humidity in your home, tackling that problem first is a good step. Later you can fix or replace the wallpaper as necessary.
