Inexpensive Window Treatments for the Budget Conscious

from:

Modern window treatments can cost hundreds, even thousands of dollars and for those of us who are on a tight budget, we just can’t fathom spending that kind of money to cover our windows. While there are some truly beautiful and innovative window treatments on the market today that are designed to beautify homes and increase energy efficiency at the same time, there are times when we just need a cheap solution to make our windows look good. We’ll take a look at a few of the solutions for extremely affordable curtains and window treatments.

Bedsheets

While I’m not suggesting that you literally hang bed sheets up to cover your windows, if you want to get creative, you can make really cute curtains and you can do this with only a minimum of sewing. First, pick out a flat sheet in a color or pattern you like. By just cutting a couple of slits in the top hem for the curtain rod to go through, you will have an instant curtain. Now, unless the length is already just the right size, you will need to cut off the sheet at the desired length and hem the bottom of it but you can literally make chic curtains in a couple of hours this way. If the window is very wide, buy one patterned flat sheet and one solid colored flat sheet and alternate the panels.

No Sew Fabric Curtains

Pick up a few yards of a fabric you like and using a bamboo, wood, or iron rod, drape the fabric over the rod in whatever way you like. Experiment until you get just the look you want. You can also forego the rod altogether and screw some decorative hooks into the wall just above the window and weave the fabric through the hooks until it hangs just the way you like it.

Shower Curtain Curtains

For a bathroom window where you need just a single curtain, cut off a decorative shower curtain to the desired length and use rings to hang it from a rod. Complement the décor in your bathroom by choosing a solid color or pattern that meshes with the rest of your bathroom décor. You can even add some decorative trimmings to the bottom of your shower curtain curtain or use tape or glue to “hem” the curtain so you will have the appearance of a finished edge.

Even if you already have the traditional mini blinds on your windows, you can dress up the look by playing around with fabric and creating a valance for next to nothing. By using a little creativity and ingenuity, you can dress up many of the window treatments in your home without spending a lot of money – and you can have fun doing it!
