Types of Window Blinds

from:

There is a wide variety of window blinds you can use to decorate your home with. Different blinds come with various features and with various price tags as well. For some, budget is the deciding factor when it comes to choosing window blinds. For others, window blinds are chosen based on features or how a particular type of blind will look in a room. The two main standards of window blinds are mini blinds and vertical blinds and then there are several variations of each. We’ll briefly take a look at the various types so you can get a better idea of your options.

Mini Blinds

Mini blinds are probably the most popular type of window blind you will see. They are popular in rental units because they are economical and look nice in a wide variety of houses and apartments. We tend to think of white when we see mini blinds but they do come in a wide variety of colors also. Most traditional mini blinds are made of either vinyl or aluminum but there are also other materials, such as wood or faux wood.

Vertical Blinds

You’ve probably seen vertical blinds on sliding glass doors. The slats on vertical blinds are wider than those on horizontal mini blinds and therefore, easier to clean. Vertical blinds are constructed of a variety of materials, including aluminum, vinyl, wood, faux wood, and even fabric. Vertical blinds are better suited to large windows and like mini, blinds, can be customized but also come in traditional lengths. Vertical blinds also come in a wide variety of colors.

Wood Blinds

Wood and faux wood blinds come in the traditional mini blind sizes and are great when you want to achieve a rustic look. Of course, wood blinds can be painted or stained so you are not limited to a certain look. Wood blinds are generally constructed out of hard woods and except for kitchens and bathrooms, or anywhere where there is humidity, they make a great choice when you are updating your window treatments. However, for high humidity areas, faux wood blinds are a good choice because you still get the look of wood but you won’t have to worry about the damage that the humidity can cause the wood blinds.

Special Features

Many of the traditional blinds can be customized with special features either to achieve a certain look or for convenience. For example, remote controlled blinds do away with the cords that could endanger pets or small children and you don’t have to get up to raise or lower them or even just open the slats. Now, while this may seem like the lazy way out, there really is more to it than that because some windows are just hard to get to and without the remote feature, the blinds are usually not opened, which limits the amount of light that can filter in.
