Types of Window Shades

from:

There are various types of window shades on the market today and they come in various colors as well. Window shades are also constructed from various fabrics and materials so you have many options when you are decorating with window shades. Below, we’ll look at some of the most popular types of window shades that are on the market today.

Roller Shades

Roller shades are pretty basic shades in that you simply roll them up or down to let in the amount of light that you please. However, you can customize roller shades and add certain features to add to the functionality and look of the shades. For example, you can choose blackout shades when you want to block light from coming into a room. These can be purchased in vinyl or in certain fabrics with a vinyl backing. Blackout roller shades are good for bedrooms when you don’t want the light shining through in the morning to wake you up and they also offer a great deal of privacy.

Cellular Shades

You may have seen these shades with the honeycomb design, which offers an attractive way to maximize the energy efficiency in your home. With cellular shades, the unique construction keeps the cool air in the home in the summer and keeps the heat out. Of course, in the winter, the opposite is true; the cellular shades keep the heat in and the cold out so although these shades offer a beautiful treatment for your windows, they also offer an important level of function, which can make your home more comfortable and save you money as well.

Cellular shades come in a wide variety of styles and colors. There are single, double, and triple cellular shades, with the triple cellular shades offering the most protection. With single cell cellular shades, the pleat will be much smaller than the triple cell style, so you will want to consider both how you want the shades to look and how much insulation you need.

Solar Shades

Solar shades are a type of roller shade that are mostly used when you have a room with a view. Solar shades will allow you to enjoy the view without having to put up with the heat and glare from the sun. As with many other types of shades, you can customize the amount of light you want to let in when you order solar shades. Solar shades are rated with a percentage of openness. For example, a solar shade with a 3% openness rating will block the most light, while a solar shade with a 14% openness rating will let in the most light. If you have excessive light and heat coming into a room with a view, then solar shades might be the best type of window treatment for that room.
